Starving Artist Society. Redefine what it means to be a starving artist: hungry to create. Zine 01.
This month, Starving Artist Society (SAS) is excited to spotlight Motion Blu: a dynamic R&B duo making waves in the Los Angeles scene. Lyricist and vocalist Bishop Freeman and multi-instrumentalist producer Simon Chernow first sparked a connection in 2021 while attending UCLA. What began as a one-off outreach, Simon seeking Bishop’s vocals for a short film, rapidly transitioned into an electrifying exchange of tracks and ideas. Fueled by mutual respect and inspiration, they decided to move forward together in their musical careers. Through a series of FaceTime calls and meet-ups, they sought a name for themselves, something that reflected their artistry. They landed on Motion Blu: Motion representing their ever-evolving sound, and Blu capturing the vast amount of emotions the color can evoke. Executed beautifully, with themes of love, connection, and self discovery, their music is transcendental. Motion Blu. Page 1. Bishop, left: From North Carolina to Southern California, Bishop Freeman is a natural-born performer. He first stepped into the spotlight as a child, singing to the rhythm of his sister's guitar for family, school, and church. As they matured, the siblings branched out to cultivate their own distinct musical identities, yet still find moments to create together and keep that original magic alive. Bishop’s artistry knows no bounds. His magnetic stage presence is undoubtedly enhanced by his skill and passion for acting, a craft he has refined as a theater major at UCLA. Set to graduate this year, Bishop continues to thrive while ensuring his creative honesty remains a constant force, both on and off the stage. Simon, right: Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Simon Chernow is a multifaceted artist to his core. Before becoming a musician, he was, and remains, a powerhouse on the dance floor, commanding the space with his skills in street dancing, krump, and house. As a teenager, Simon’s dance videos were silenced by audio copyright blocks. Refusing to let this stop him, he was inspired to start making beats of his own. His love for movement, people, and music led him to UCLA, where he double majored in dance and education, then graduated in 2025. Beyond the stage and studio, Simon is a humanitarian. Although we might not hear him sing in his music, his voice is strong in his community. Page 2.
LASAGNA. Meat sauce: 1 pound ground beef, 1 half pound Italian sausage, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 medium onion diced, 1 third cup carrots diced, 1 third cup celery diced, 4 garlic cloves minced, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 1 quarter cup dry red wine, 24 ounces tomato puree or passata, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon oregano, 1 quarter teaspoon black pepper, basil and parmesan rind. Bechamel sauce: 4 tablespoons butter, 4 tablespoons flour, 3 cups warm whole milk, salt and pepper to taste, pinch of nutmeg. A fun and entertaining watch: get to know more about Motion Blu as their cooking skills are put to the test. Will their musical talent translate to culinary skill? Pro tip: ordering pizza is a good Plan B. Pasta: 20 lasagna sheets, 16 to 20 ounces freshly shredded mozzarella, 3 quarters cup freshly shredded parmesan cheese. Instructions. Bechamel sauce: in a small saucepan melt butter and incorporate flour. Whisk for a few minutes. Slowly add warmed milk until thick and creamy. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Set aside. Meat sauce: in a large pot sauté onion, carrot, and celery in olive oil over medium heat. Once softened, add fresh garlic and mix for a minute. Add in ground beef and Italian sausage. Once browned, incorporate tomato paste and cook down for a few minutes. Deglaze with red wine and reduce. Pour in tomato puree. Season and add basil and parmesan rind. Simmer for 20 minutes until reduced and thickened. Set aside. The pasta: don’t boil the lasagna sheets, cover them with hot water for 15 minutes while the meat sauce cooks. When the noodles are flexible, begin layering in an oven-safe pan or dish. The layering order is meat, noodles, bechamel, mozzarella, and parm. Repeat until you reach the top, adding a generous layer of cheese on top. Bake covered at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 20 minutes. Lastly, broil for 1 to 2 minutes. Pages 3 and 4.
